Cat Age Calculator: How Old Is My Cat?
Your cat's life stage and how many more years it can expect — from a real life table, not from a chart the guideline bodies quietly deleted.

The life table: what cats at each age can still expect
| If your cat is… | Expected further life | Expected age reached | AAHA/AAFP stage |
|---|
Read down the last-but-one column: it rises. That isn't an error — it's how life tables work. Life expectancy at birth is averaged over every cat including those lost young; once your cat has got past that risk, its expected total climbs.
The chart that got deleted
The cat-age chart has a stranger story than the dog one, and it's worth five minutes of your time.
Unlike the dog version — which we couldn't trace to any document at all — the cat chart is genuinely published. It's right there in the 2010 AAFP/AAHA Feline Life Stage Guidelines, a full "Human equivalent" column: 12 months = 15, two years = 24, then +4 a year, all the way to 25 years = 116.
So far, so authoritative. Then you read where they got it:
"These guidelines follow a convenient life stage classification developed by the Feline Advisory Bureau and adopted in the recent AAFP Senior Care Guidelines."
The Feline Advisory Bureau is a cat charity — now International Cat Care. The chart came from a wellness programme called "WellCat for Life". Follow the trail back and it stops there: no study, no data, no derivation. The same 2010 document is candid about it, calling its own groupings "arbitrary demarcations along a spectrum, and not absolutes".
Then the 2021 revision deleted it. We downloaded the current AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines and searched for "human year", "cat year", "human age", "human equivalent" and "conversion" —zero hits for every one. We audited the embedded images too, because the 2010 chart is a picture that no text search can see. It is genuinely gone. The 2021 guidelines define life stages and decline the conversion, exactly as their canine counterpart does.
So the position today: a convention a charity invented, that the professional bodies adopted for a decade and then dropped — while International Cat Care's own consumer pages still publish it, with no citations, even though its veterinary division co-authored the 2021 guidelines that removed it.
It might even be roughly right. That's not the point. Nobody has ever shown that it is, and a number nobody can justify shouldn't be the headline answer on a page you're trusting.
What we show instead, and why it's better
A life table beats an average, and the difference matters most for the cats people worry about — the old ones.
Ask most sites how long cats live and you'll get a single number. The real figure from Teng et al. (2024), a VetCompass study of 7,936 recorded cat deaths, is 11.74 years at birth. But that average is dragged down by every kitten lost early — and your cat isn't a newborn, it's alive in front of you.
| Cat's age now | Expected further life | Expected age reached |
|---|---|---|
| Newborn | 11.7 years | 11.7 |
| 5 years | 8.8 years | 13.8 |
| 10 years | 5.5 years | 15.5 |
| 12 years | 4.2 years | 16.2 |
| 15 years | 2.7 years | 17.7 |
Look at the right-hand column climbing. That is not a mistake, and it's the most useful thing on this page: a 12-year-old cat is expected to reach 16.2, not 11.7. Owners of older cats are routinely told an "average lifespan" that their cat has already passed, which reads as bad news and is simply the wrong statistic. Surviving buys expected life.
